Experience
I graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1999 with a Bachelor of Music Education, K-12, Vocal and Instrumental degree. I then served as the Vocal Music Director at Robin Mickle Middle School in Lincoln, Nebraska, and rebuilt a vocal music program that had fallen into non-existence. Along that journey, I served as chair of the School Improvement Committee and led the process of Mickle becoming the first middle school in Lincoln to become accredited through NCA. In addition to the experience and trainings with school improvement, Mr. Gerry Larson of LPS mentored me in professional development and guided me in the process of developing and conducting learning opportunities for staff. I earned a Masters in Educational Administration from Concordia University in 2003.
My current work tends to revolve around School Improvement, Leadership Development, and facilitating Professional Learning Communities. I have been blessed to personally learn from some of the "greats" in each of these areas, including Michael Fullan, Andy Hargreaves, Rick DuFour, Becky DuFour, Robert Eaker, Dennis Sparks, Mike Schmoker, Bill Daggett, Ray McNulty, and others. I enjoy being challenged, and taking theory and putting it into action. I look forward to continuing to meet and serve teachers and staff in the ESU!
I am also currently enrolled in the UNL-UNO Joint Doctoral Program in Educational Administration. Part of the degree program involves the Nebraska Leadership for Learning co-hort, a joint effort of UNL and the Nebraska Department of Education. I hope to complete the degree by 2010.
PersonalMy wife, Dawn, and I have two boys: Diel (born 11/17/98) and Kalim (born 6/29/00). We were married in 1996 and moved to Kearney in July 2004. We both volunteered for a "Youth Year of Service" when we were younger, Dawn serving at Maxwell International Baha'i School on Vancouver Island, Canada, and me serving at the Baha'i World Centre in Haifa, Israel.
We love to garden and look forward to the landscaping opportunities at our new house! We also love to cook (which goes hand-in-hand with eating!) and we enjoy trying new and exotic recipes. My favorite food is hummous (or humus, houmous, hummus, etc) and it took me about three years to "perfect" the recipe. Contact me and I'll be happy to give it out for free. . . Much to Dawn's chagrin, I love Husker football and enjoy watching any team that might have some (even remote) relationship to the Huskers.
